Bridging the Gap for Grade 12 Students into Higher Education
1. Executive Summary
Beyond Matric is an initiative of the Wezizwe Foundation aimed at breaking financial barriers for Grade 12 learners who have the academic potential but lack the financial resources to pursue tertiary education. Through this project we seek to provide bursaries and holistic support to ensure deserving students can transition successfully into higher education. We are appealing to donors, partners, and corporate sponsors to join us in unlocking opportunities for these young people—transforming individual lives, uplifting families, and contributing to South Africa’s broader socio-economic development.
2. Background & Rationale
South Africa faces a persistent challenge: many talented Grade 12 graduates are unable to enroll in universities or colleges due to financial constraints. According to Higher Education statistics, thousands of matriculants each year qualify for tertiary studies but are unable to proceed because of unaffordable registration fees, tuition, or living expenses. This creates a cycle of limited opportunity, unemployment and wasted potential. By intervening at this critical stage, we aim to change the trajectory of young people’s lives, creating future professionals, leaders and innovators.
3. Project Objectives
- Provide financial assistance to academically deserving Grade 12 graduates to access tertiary education. - Offer mentorship and guidance to ensure funded students are supported throughout their academic journey. - Promote equity and inclusion by prioritising learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. - Build sustainable partnerships with donors, corporates, and educational institutions to expand impact annually.
4. Target Beneficiaries
- Grade 12 students from disadvantaged backgrounds across South Africa. - Learners who have demonstrated academic potential but lack financial support.

6. Funding Requirements
We are seeking support to cover the following estimated costs per student: - Registration & Tuition: R150 000 - Books, Laptop & Study Materials: R30 000 - Living Allowance/Transport: R10 000 - Mentorship & Programme Administration: R6 000 - Residence/Commune: R60 000 Total per student: R256 000 Annual target: 20 students
